AN ESCAPE INTO THE CLOUD FOREST

The cloud forests of the Sri lankan  mountains  are a very unique  habitat hosting one of the world’s richest biodiversity.Hortain plains the headwaters of the three  major rivers of the island is a UNESCO heritage site.This wet environment with variable  altitudes is home  to a remarkable number of endemic species that  are found nowhere else on the planet. The mountainous terrain isolates a large number of known and still unknown plants, animals, fungi, and microbes

  • Species including the elusive leopard and some other  remarkable species of mammals such as bear monkey.
  • Scenic  drive to the Horton Plains.
  • Bush camping inside the national park.
  • Exploring  Ohiya and to the main entrance for trails of mountain leopards.
  • Animal  monitoring program at 1st night using trail cameras,night visionary and hearings.
  • Following day morning  main trekking of the Horton Plains national park and learn about flora-fauna geology  and paleontological  highly educational naturalist-led day hike.including bakers falls, World’s-End and mini World’s-End view points.
  • Driving back to the lodge after breakfast.

THE DEVIL’S STAIRCASE HIKE

Follow in the footsteps of the Devil, walking from Kalupahana to Ohiya,this is nearly 20 km,however can be shortened the distance by taking adventurous short cuts going through the montane forest. hike where  dramatic views of the magisterial mountains are complemented by cascading waterfalls.Here you will have the opportunity not only to enjoy the beauty of the environment,

but also to take a close look at the difficult lives of the mountain dwellers. In fact, their world is completely different from the urban  environment.

  • Can go by foot or 4WD Car
  • Breakfast at Bambarakanda
  • After reaching Ohiya, you can continue to Horton Plains by car or to Haputale via train.
  • Back to the lodge

SAMANALAWEWA RESERVOIR ISLAND CAMPING

It’s all about the water  at Samanalawewa Reservoir in the Southern plateau,a beautiful reservoir with “fingers” for exploring  by kayak, and with natural pools with large granite slabs that  are ideal for lounging.

You can explore  the local freshwater  fisherman and fishing by yourself,with a decent fishing population making  catches of big tilapia,snake headed fish and introduced Catla  fish.

Going in the dry season you can also witness the solo and medium sized herds of wild elephants.

  • Camping on and island and kayaking from mainland to the islands
  • Sightseeing of submerged ruins of ancient buddhist monastery and an ancient wind powered iron smelting technology.
  • Take half a day to either the “Handagiriya” rear entrance of Udawalawe national park or local gem mines around Samanalawewa.
  • BBQ dinner with river fish.
  • Back to the lodge.

ORGANIC FARM EXPERIENCE

Get a guided  tour with an agronomist to our organic herbs and vegetable farm.Hotel is also home  to a 750 square-foot organic and completely sustainable greenhouse that  grows of fruits and vegetables.Learn about basic organic farming  and bee keeping.After your tour, you’ll learn to cook traditional dishes in our rustic jungle kitchen  and then sit down to enjoy them accompanied by herbal tea. After your class, bring home  recipes to use at home  and a coconut shell soup bowl souvenir set.

  • Learn to cook four traditional Sri Lankan  dishes from a master chef.
  • Tour a hotel farm, and collect  fresh vegetables for making  your meal.

JUNIOR NATURALIST OF THE DAY

The junior naturalist program is a free outdoor program designed for families with kids in age 6-16 to encourage the exploration of the local environment while learning  something new about nature.

Anyone who has an interest in the natural world around them  can become a Junior Naturalist! An adult must accompany their Junior Naturalist to the programs.

The program includes a scavenger hunt inside the  jungle of hotel premises under the supervision of a professional naturalist.

The lodge would prize the winning kids who participated in the event  and badge which can be used as a discount coupon anytime they book the hotel at their legal age.

ANIMAL MONITORING PROGRAM

Since our lodge is located in an area  with a rich biodiversity It’s no wonder  that  we are enamored with furry, feathered, and scaled critters from near and far. Have  you ever considered staying at a hotel or resort that  offers memorable animal  experiences right on-site?

Join the camp’s resident naturalist on a night walk to set up and check  the camera traps and collect  samples of animal  droppings, pug marks(foot prints) as we collect  data which can be used for wildlife conservation.

On the night walk the naturalist will explain about the nocturnal animals and flowers and plants that  release the scent only at night.

  • The night walk starts after dinner.
  • Trail cameras, head lamps and other  equipment will be provided.
  • Check what you have captured on camera traps on following day after breakfast.
